What’s a Sci-Fi Geek to Watch?

MLP May 16, 2011 3

Last week, two of the shows I have marked on my DVR as to record “All New Episodes” ended: Stargate: Universe and Smallville,  Yes I realize I could be ripped to shreds by fans and critics alike about both of those shows, and yes they had their flaws, buy they have also been a staple for me during late nights where I just needed to forget about life for an hour and immerse myself in something else.  Now, they’re both gone, no more new episodes for either (unless SGU gets the miracle Hail Mary) So what am I left to watch?  Yes I still have Doctor Who, and can watch other shows on Netflix, but there is just something about being able to sit down, and watch a brand new airing of an episode, at night, after the kids are asleep, and all the lights are off in the house except my TV.  Yes I do have a few other shows I watch, plus sports and news, but the niche that was created watching Star Trek: The Next Generation as a kid is slowly becoming harder to fill as networks get away from expensive to product sci-fi shows to the cheaper more cost-effective reality shows.  So I guess now comes to time to start searching out for the latest show to fill my sci-fi void.  I feel the journey is going to be long and sparse, even as you look at shows renewed and cancelled this past week, science fiction seems to be a dwindling genre, it’s going to be harder to find my fix.

So I ask you, any suggestions?

I am actually looking forward to this summer when Eureka, Warehouse 13, and Psych return. Granted, these shows have more of a humor based science fiction than super hero science fiction, but they are clever, engaging, and do my nerd heart good. This fall some new shows are supposed to hit the small screen, many with a scifi slant, like NBC’s District 17, which I do hope gets aired.

Yeah I’ve always enjoyed Eureka. Warehouse 13 I just always seemed to miss and never got into, and I always catch Psych when I can but its never a must see for me.

Let’s see: just my personal opinion but anything on syfy is verboten, boycotted.
There is the most excellent Walking Dead coming back this fall on A and E.
You could also rewatch sgu from beginning to end and then listen to the gateworld podcast as they have done a podcast to match each show’s episode. although they still have to release podcasts for the last two shows.

There is the upcoming falling skies on TNT this summer too.

I too echo your sentiment about science fiction becoming a dead relm. My father and I watched all sttng episodes together. I will never forget this. It is something I hope to do with my son and future daughter (she is almost here!)
after sttng ended, we moved on to the x-files, for a time my mom even joined us. It was fun, good times.
