Funny thing as I was coming home this evening, I noticed my iPhone have that nice little 3G up top of the screen. Problem is, I was nowhere near anywhere that I’m used to having 3G, at least with AT&T. So I tried to stay calm, not assume that what I was seeing was true, but all the way up I75, off the exit, through Mt. Vernon, and all the way home, my phone never changed from saying 3G. I seriously questioned the accuracy of my phone’s display, I actually made a call, and while on that call I posted a tweet on Twitter. Sure enough it went, I was in a 3G area. I was using voice and data at the same time! What the heck is going on?!

So, I’ve searched online, no official information. I’ve made a couple of inquiries, and the best response I’ve received is basically to wait and there will possibly be a press release regarding the coverage expansion soon. I’ve posted on Facebook, and what I’ve been able to gather to this point from contacts is that Mt. Vernon, KY does in fact have 3G coverage now (about time!) and that Corbin, KY is expected to get it around May. If this is the case and there is any guesses to be made of this, I would make a guess that AT&T is finally boosting their 3G coverage in Kentucky, and at the very least, following the I75 corridor with maybe like a ten-mile radius on both sides? (If you’ve seen coverage maps before, you probably understand what I’m meaning)
As of right now, AT&T’s site still only lists the cities of Bowling Green, Hopkinsville, Lexington, Louisville, and Somerset as having 3G coverage in the state of Kentucky. I know the city of Winchester and I believe maybe Mt. Sterling have both had 3G coverage for a while, so its hard to gage how old that information is on AT&T’s site. There is nothing in the news section, message boards, or anything. Nothing points to what areas are getting the 3G treatment. I suppose only time will tell as to how much 3G coverage is actually increased in Kentucky.
But if you’re from Kentucky and you’ve suddenly noticed you have 3G, chime in! AT&T might not be able to update their own information and maps, but us geeks can figure it out together!
UPDATE:
From what I’ve experienced and heard from others, 3G now covers down Hwy 150 nearly to the Brodhead fairgrounds, down Hwy 25 to Roundstone, and is now in London as well.
So as of 4/1 all you travelers from Ohio that come through here going to Lake Cumberland, now will have 3G coverage all the way from Lexington to the lake, with the except of Berea. For whatever reasons Berea is still without 3G.
UPDATE 2:
It seems that London, and Stanford have now been added into the 3G coverage area. AT&T has even updated their coverage map on their website. Seems that the 3G area is slowing growing, but still has a few holes in spots (still nothing in Berea?) and is no where near the south eastern portion of the state. Also, still no official announcement from AT&T about the expansion. Either they’re waiting until a certain overall area is covered, or they simply do no want to acknowledge publically that they are just now getting 3G to areas that have had 3G through other carriers for a while now.
