It is safe to say that 2011 was a good year for gaming. Between the 2011 releases of games like Skyrim: The Elder Scrolls and the recently released Stars Wars: The Old Republic, gaming had a good run in 2011. But if it was a good year for gaming, it was an unbelievably successful year for PC gaming. The two games were smash successes on the PC platform and other games like Batman: Arkham City and Rage played up to the PC’s strengths. This can only mean good things for the future of PC gaming, a great time to buy, and even get a good deal.
The zenith of 2011 for PC gamers came at the tail end of the year with the release of Star Wars: The Old Republic. This game has shot to the tops of reviewer’s Best of 2011 lists and is only available on the PC format. The game’s graphic and massive storyline are a few of the feathers that the game places firmly in PC’s cap.
Other games that were released across multiple gaming platforms were best experienced on the PC. The driving experience in F1 2011 is second to none on PC. While it handles well on the Xbox 360 and the PS3, those experiences just don’t match up to the responsiveness and authenticity of the PC experience.
The PhysX effects on Batman: Arkham City are good on the 360. But they become unbelievable when backed by the computing power of a PC. When the caped crusader walks down an alleyway in Gotham City and disturbs the steam rising from a nearby sewer lid, you might be convinced you’re watching something play out in real-time in front of you.
Let’s hope that these trends will provide enough of a push for developers who are looking to further explore the possibilities of PC gaming. If we get more ported games straight from the 360 and PS3, no one will complain. But 2011 exposed the potential for further development in the PC world and let’s hope this potential gets realized soon.
