Are The Skrulls No Longer in The Avengers Movie?

The other day I wrote about The Avengers movie, wondering why the “push” or the “hype” for the film had not occurred.  Well looks like I may have found an answer to that.

There has been reports and rumors nearly nonstop since the film was announced that The Avengers would be facing off against an alien army or invasion, and it was presumed to be The Skrulls.  There had even been rumors at one time that Cobie Smulders’ Maria Hill could be a double agent and in fact be a Skrull.  Well now word has come out that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has said that Fox owns the rights to the entire Skrull Empire, where as before they thought Fox simply owned the rights to the Super Skrull.  Whatever happened to cause Marvel Studios to think one way before and differently now is unclear, but the rumor is now that the alien force in The Avengers has had to be rebranded and redesigned.

Could we be seeing a change from The Skrulls to the Chitauri, the alien race that The Ultimates, (Marvel’s Ultimate Universe answer to The Avengers) faced in the first volume of Ultimates?  It could explain the slow down in advertising and why we’ve been seeing the same images and clips.  Plus there have apparently been reshoots recently too.  Hard to say since Marvel Studios has never officially confirmed The Avengers would be facing off against an alien force, but definitely seems like it could be the answer to what I was asking previously.

I’m still holding out hope we get not only a new Avengers trailer, but a trailer to The Amazing Spider-Man during the Super Bowl, where both of the films baddies are revealed.
