Last spring, I asked if 2011 was going to be “The Year of the Spider-Man Costumes” as it was determined that including the Broadway musical, the costume from the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man film, and the classic red and blue costume, any one person could have seen Spidey in up to 9 costumes last year. (And that doesn’t include the classic black and white, Tron variant and others that appeared on covers)
Well, it seems that 2012 isn’t going to slow down much in kicking out the new costumes if the newest promotional image for the “Ends of the Earth” storyline is a clue to anything as it shows Spider-Man in what looks like a new armored suit, with helmet, (and possibly rubberized/insulated boots) to wear as he faces the Sinister Six. Of course with his new job at Horizon labs, he is able to kick out new costumes or gadgets when he needs them, as Peter has always been a genius, he just never had the financial means to develop anything. So storyline wise, it’s not a stretch at all, but its starting to feel a little gimmicky, even more so then Iron Man’s multiple armors.
So, for all those keeping count, that will make a total of 10 costumes that will be seen under the Spider-Man banner, and again, just like above, that doesn’t count costumes like Miles Morale’s makeshift costume with elbow pads in Ultimate Spider-Man (he did wear it as his costume to fight crime) or Kane’s costume seen in his new ongoing. If we include those two, as far as I can count, that will make a dozen costumes, in continuity (albeit different continuities) and under the Spider-Man banner. Twelve! Within two years! Not even a full two years! Who wants to make a bet even more are coming before the end of the year?
Anyway, here is my original print I made showing the 9 costumes from last year, which has the 3 “Big Time” storyline costumes, the classic costume, the black and blue Fantastic Four costume, the black and white Future Foundation costume, the red and black Ultimate costume, the costume from Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man, and the Broadway play; Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark costume. You can see the new costume from “Ends of the Earth” above. I’m starting to consider creating a new print, showing all costumes I can find that have been used in the last 24 months. We’ll see if time allows.
So, what’s your favorite costume in the last two years? Do you think it’s getting too gimmicky?
