Who Are the Aliens in The Avengers

With the release of the 10 second teaser for the full Super Bowl trailer, the internet has been rampant with people trying to decide who the alien race is that The Avengers seem to be facing.

The top theories are the Badoon, The Knights of Wundagore, or in fact the Skrulls.

So, up to this point, what DO we know regarding the army that Loki has to face the Avengers?

  • Producer Kevin Feige was interviewed by Empire Magazineand said: “Who said they were aliens?  It’s not Skrulls, I’ve been clear about that.  The identity of the alien race is not impactful.  It exists in the comic books…”
  • Whoever the aliens are, they will be CGI as shown by the men wearing motion capture suits during filming, along with different types of alien weaponry (View pics here)
  • There have been reports that the aliens differ in appearance, and wearing armor (was strong reference to Skrulls before being debunked)
  • We have seen this screenshot, presumed to have been the first view of one of the aliens.  If it is, it doesn’t help me a bit.  Showing Fury battling one of the S.H.I.E.L.D. men who are presumed to be controlled by Loki.

So, who could this race, which exists in the comics be?  Lets look at where the pieces fit:

Alpha Centaurians

I missed these the first time around, but from what we’ve seen of the army the Alpha Centaurians do fit the look.  Head shape is similar, the feet and three toes fit as well.  They are also obscure enough to not have a big impact, but also do exist within the Marvel Comic Universe, which is how Kevin Feige described them.image

The Knights of Wundagore [AKA New Men]

I’ll go on record and say that if this is the group that Loki bands with him, they’ll be called “New Men” and very little, if any reference to Wundagore will be made.  The New Men are a group of hyper-evolved animals which were created by the High Evolutionary.  The High Evolutionary equipped them with advanced weaponry and armor, along with flying atomic steeds.

All these fit with the descriptions and shots we’ve seen, including screen shots of the 10 second teaser to the Super Bowl spot.  If you check out the shot, it does look like what a big screen representation of an atomic steed could be.  Also, if you look closely, or find some of the more zoomed in views of these screen shots, the alien pilot does appear to have a dark appearance that looks someone simian.  All fitting the description of the New Men, and considering that the identity of the alien race is not impactful, a full detailed backstory of the New Men would not be required.

Badoon

Similar in that their backstory or identity would not be of that much importance, The Badoon has been another species to be mentioned as a possibility.  The Badoon are a reptilian alien race, which would fit with the motion-capture suits.  The technology includes a personal cloaking, and a hand-held particle gun.  Which, from the picture below, could easily fit the role of a particle gun.

The Skrulls

Director Joss Whedon has dismissed the Skrulls as the race of the alien army

Even though the Skrulls have been eliminated by Kevin Feige himself, this screen shot has some people saying that Loki has a pilot, and that the pilot looks eerily similar to a Skrull.  While yes I can see that myself, from what we can see, that doesn’t eliminate either of the other races above.

The theory of the Skrulls was amplified again when pictures of these toys surfaced online, looking very much like the Skrulls do in the comics.

Kree

Like the Skrulls, Director Joss Whedon has dismissed the Kree as the alien race.

I had never considered Kree worth mentioning, however a poster over on SHH and CBR named Jordanstine has claimed to have an inside source that has seen a screening, and in conversations has denied certain alien races, including the Badoon, but has not done the same for the Skrulls or the Kree.  He also has mentioned that the inside source randomly mentioned Captain Marvel.  Who also just happens to appear on a cover to a comic related to the upcoming Avengers vs X-Men.

Breakworld

Breakworld?  Oh, Breakworld is just a planet/race of aliens that appeared in The Astonishing X-Men a few years ago.  They have a dark greenish/grey skin, wear armor.  Oh, and they were created by Joss Whedon….

Check out the picture below from the website Grizzly Bomb where its pointing out the comparison of the weapon seen in some of the fight scenes and a weapon seen in that Astonishing X-Men run.

Dark Elves

The look is very similar to what we’ve seen, and in a slight design tweak could be mistaken for Skrulls.  Plus they originate from one of the 9 realms

Who else could it be?

While I’m not sure who it could or couldn’t be at this point, I’ve even suggested that it could be the Chitauri, from the Ultimate Universe, a quote by Tom Hiddleston [Loki] from an interview from Access Hollywood has me thinking something a little different.

“That’s basically Manhattan being destroyed by Loki’s army. I’m not allowed to be specific about how that army is made up, but that’s the battle for Manhattan.”

I’m not allowed to be specific about how that army is made up?  Not “who the army is” or “who the alien race is” but “how the army is made up”

That statement just makes me feel like it could be just an army of random alien races that Loki puts together.  Would be a great way to throw some easter-eggs into the film, and let fans seen his or her favorite alien race.  I’ve not completely eliminated a version of the Annihilation Wave or someone like Nebula and her army/minions.  Both of those could lend themselves to Thanos and the Infinity Gems/Gauntlet.  It would help make more sense for that tie-in cologne too: “Infinity Formula”

Here is a look at what the aliens will look like in a Legos set.  Looking at the box you can see their faces and they appear human to me.

What do you think?  Who do you think it could or could not be?

The Infinity Formula is what keeps Nick Fury young. It’s not a reference to the Infinity Gauntlet. Note the SHIELD logo on the box.

Found this theory that says the army could be from Norse mythology: http://www.superheroauthority.com/2012/04/avengers-alien-invasion-army-could-they.html
