Russell T Davies is at it again and not slowing down as today a new Doctor Who 60th-anniversary cast member has been announced, Yasmin Finney as Rose. Like with the Tennant and Tate announcement, Finney is currently filming scenes that will be seen in 2023. So as clearly they’re making casting announcements prior to potential leaks from filming, sit back and wait, because who knows what else we’ll be finding out about soon.
Finney said in a statement:
If anyone would have told 8-year-old Yasmin that one day she’d be part of this iconic show, I would have never in a million years believed them. This show has a place in so many people’s hearts, so to be seen as a trans actress by the legend himself Russell, has not only made my year, it’s made my life. I cannot wait to begin this journey and for you all to see how Rose blossoms. Get Ready.
The announcement is a curious one, as this character’s name is clearly Rose. There is no misnomer or anything that seems to be meant as anything misleading. So it will be curious to see where this story goes. A brand new character that simply has the same name, Rose? Alternate universe Rose? A character who is not in fact named Rose but for some strange reason the Doctor insists on calling her by that name? Who knows?! I have no idea, but I’m intrigued.
In regards to the casting, Davies said in the announcement:
“Life on Doctor Who gets brighter and wilder, how can there be another Rose? You’ll find out in 2023, but it’s an absolute joy to welcome Yasmin to the Doctor Who set. We all fell in love with her in Heartstopper, one of those shows which changes the world – and now Yasmin can change the Whoniverse!”
Just like last time, including returning showrunner Russell T Davies’ Instagram post on the subject.
